Something I have been looking into recently. I’m
thinking more and more about possible careers change into the computer science
industry or IT industry.
However I’m thinking that my application may not go so well
if all I have is “I learnt the concepts and structure online via codecademy.com”.
As much as the content online is useful I feel it would be wholly inadequate in
a job application. Unless codecademy, code school, udacity or whatever carry
wait in the industry.
Treehouse is a site that seems to target current people
in the industry as well as learners. One of it quotes on the website is “Earning
2,000 points on Treehouse can correspond with a $10,000 increase in salary.
Earn achievements and rack up those points to become an expert”. Now to achieve
this Treehouse must mean something in the world of professional computer
coding.
More about Treehouse when I finally get into a position
to be able to review it with some purpose.
Back to internships, or Virtual internships in particular.
I live in the UK and as far as I’m aware these aren’t too common place here. I’ve
seen the film with Vince Vaughan and Owen Wilson (great film) but other than
that what I understand is it’s a bit like work experience spliced with a job
interview. I love the idea of it all but am not in a position with a dependent
family to give up work to learn fulltime or away from said family at the moment.
I however do like the way it works and I have managed to
find a couple of options on the net that might be of interest to me as that are
virtual opportunities. I can perform my work remotely and email the results in
once complete. Now I’m not naïve enough to think I won’t have deadlines etc and
I may need to be up some nights to complete tasks as well as working fulltime.
Anyways, at this moment in time I’m not in a position to
apply so until that point I’m will continue to do as much as I can in the mean
time.
